Teams play for week 2 bounce back

With league play underway for many area high school football teams, a victory in week two would keep them in the hunt for a league title despite being only two weeks into the regular season.

Multiple area teams hope to rebound from a week 1 stumble this Friday for the second round of high school football.

With many teams diving into league play, getting off on the right foot may be crucial for those gunning for conference titles.

Iola Mustangs vs.
Wellsville Eagles

The Iola High Mustangs will host perennial powerhouse Wellsville for Friday’s home opener.

The Mustangs opened the season with a 46-0 loss to Baldwin last Friday and rebounding with a win over the Wellsville Eagles will not come easy.

The Eagles come into the contest with a full head of steam after opening Pioneer League play with a 34-7 victory over Anderson County.

Humboldt Cubs vs.
Cherryvale Chargers

The Humboldt Cubs will spend another night on the  road when they head to Cherryvale for their second Tri-Valley League contest.

Last week, the Cubs fell 38-0 in their TVL opener against Caney Valley.

Humboldt may face an equally motivated Cherryvale team. The Chargers also fell in a lopsided mollywhopping, 33-6, to Neodesha.

Marmaton Valley Wildcats vs. Yates Center Wildcats

In the only pairing of two local teams, the Marmaton Valley Wildcats hope to keep their undefeated streak going against Yates Center. Last Friday, MVHS demolished Oswego, the 2024 TRL runner-up champion.         Yates Center will have its hands full. However, Yates Center also experienced a significant offensive uptick in their 48-28 loss to Crest.

Crest Lancers vs.

Northeast Vikings

A win Friday would further establish the Lancers’ footing in the TRL following last Friday’s blowout of Yates Center. Although early, Northeast may put a bit more emphasis in Friday’s game after opening the season with a 52-18 loss to St. Paul
