Titans, Lady Jaguars win Crest Invitational

Top talent from the area’s smaller high schools competed in the 2010 Crest High Invitational track meet Thursday at Iola’s Riverside Park.
Hartford High’s girls outdistanced the 11-team field with 74 points to win the team title. Pleasanton was second with 70 points.
Southern Coffey County’s girls had 60 points for fifth followed by Crest with 56 points. Uniontown took eighth with 50 points and Marmaton Valley had three points.
Iola High’s junior varsity girls scored 33 points for 10th.
Southern Coffey County High’s Titans won the boys’ team championship with 91 points. Lyndon was second with 84 points and Marmaton Valley scored 71 points for third place.
Uniontown tied for sixth with Iola High’s junior varsity boys. Both scored 43 points. Crest had 29 points.
In the girls’ division, Uniontown won three events.
Abbie Smith won the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 41⁄2” inches. She later ran away from the competition in winning the 100-meter high hurdles in 15.53 seconds. Smith took second in the 300-meter low hurdles in 51.3 seconds.
Jacy Ermel won the shot put with a throw of 35’61⁄4”.
Crest High’s Shayla Stephens and Amanda Strickler went 1-2 in the javelin. Stephens won on a throw of 116’3” with Strickler’s top throw at 108’111⁄2”.
Southern Coffey County High’s Ashton Gudenkauf claimed the gold medal in the triple jump with a leap of 32’5”. Teammate Shelby Birk was second at 32’2”.
Marmaton Valley’s Mercedes Trollope finished sixth in the triple jump at 27’7”. Lydia Lance was fifth in the long jump at 14’61⁄4”.
The Fillies’ junior varsity went third and fourth in the girls’ pole vault. Breanna Stout cleared 6’6” for third and Chanel Coyne was fourth at 6-foot.
In the javelin, Mindy Powelson was fourth with a throw of 102’5”. Powelson also took sixth in the shot put at 29’7”. Celeste Ambrose was sixth in the high jump at 4’6”.
Sydney Owens ran fourth in the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 47.6 seconds. Ty Ellis placed fourth in the 100-meter high hurdles in 18.7 seconds.
The Fillies’ 4×800-meter relay team of Abby Works, Owens, Kristen Linn and Stout was fifth in 12:36.5. Iola’s 4×100-meter relay team of Ambrose, Coyne, Stout and Ellis was fifth in 57.1 seconds.
Stout, Owens, Works and Coyne combined for sixth place in the 4×400-meter relay race in 4:55.8.

THE TITAN BOYS won six events. Trevor Smith claimed gold in the 100-meter dash in 11.36 seconds and took the 200-meter dash in 23.77 just in front of Uniontown’s Ben Dixon, 23.94.
Colin Kraft won the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.21 seconds. Marmaton Valley’s Kurtis LaRue took second in 16.79 seconds.
The places were switched in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles. LaRue took the gold medal in 42.6 seconds and Kraft was second in 43.3.
Kraft won the long jump with a leap of 19’71⁄2”. Dixon was second at 19’6” and Marmaton Valley’s Daylen Houk was third at 18’91⁄2”.
Tanner McNutt of Marmaton Valley won the 400-meter dash in 53.5 seconds edging Dixon at 53.6. McNutt was fifth in the long   jump at 17’81⁄4” and fourth in the high jump at 5’6”.
Kraft won the triple jump with a distance of 40’ 1⁄4”.
The boys’ javelin event was announced at the meet as Iola’s Charles Apt winning with a throw of 164’1 “ and Southern Coffey County’s Ryan True second at 155’9”. Iola’s Ralph Shafer took third at 154’4”.
But on the complete results sent, the Iola throwers were not included.
True was first, Crest’s Thomas Dietrich was second at 142’61⁄2”, Marmaton Valley High’s Shawn Storrer was third at 138’1” and Crest’s Jordan Morton was sixth at 126’91⁄2”.
Uniontown’s Trenton Miller won the discus with a throw of 126’0”. Southern Coffey County’s Jeremiah Mirante was second at 120’7” and Crest’s Jake Tinsley was fifth at 111’8”.
Iola’s junior varsity 4×800-meter relay team of Apt, Dylan Lower, Chris Harrington and Eli Johns won the race in 9:07. The 4×100-meter relay team of Devon Burton, Stephen McDonald, Adam Morrell and Denton Christian turned in a third-place time of 49.9 seconds.
Lower was third in the pole vault with a clearance of 9 feet. Mikal Bossell ran fourth in the 400-meter dash in 54 seconds and Morrell was sixth in the 200-meter dash in 24.9 seconds.
