LONGTON — The Southern Coffey County High Titans picked up a win in their first district contest of the season Friday. The Titans won in commanding fashion against the Elk Valley Lions Friday evening, 54-8. So. Coffey Co. 26-14-14-x—54
“It felt like we still made some progress, and had the chance to pick up a district win,” Head Coach Korey Lankton said.
Tyler Houston opened the romp with a fumble recovery, which he took to the house on a 32-yard run.
Then it was off to the races.
The Titans scored six consecutive times in the first two quarters, dropping 40 points on the Lions before the half. Walker Harred rushed twice for TDs, Chism Newkirk ran one into the end zone and tossed a 14-yard scoring pass to Josiah Witteman; Michael Hill had a 12-yard touchdown run as well.
The Lions’ lone score came from a 55-yard pass midway through the third. Another Witteman-Newkirk connection for 34 yards, coupled with a 1-yard Newkirk run on the following drive, ended the game in the third quarter.
Southern Coffey County rushed for 294 yards in the contest and brought in 91 passing yards for a total of 385. The Lions put up 104 yards of total offense.
Harred rushed six times for 182 yards, followed by Hill with 34 yards on 11 carries and Carter Toy with 34 yards on three carries. Newkirk completed 6 passes on 10 attempts. Witteman caught three passes for 69 yards.
Defensively, Toy led with four unassisted tackles, followed by Harred with three. Tanner Garretson, Cody Perry and Josiah Witteman had two apiece.
The Titans host Chetopa next week for a key district matchup.
