Tournament wins escape Pony girls

BURLINGTON — Iola Middle School’s eighth-grade bounced back from a disappointing first game Saturday to lead 18-15 after three quarters against Prairie View.
“A couple of mistakes in the last minute hurt but the girls did a good job and played hard against Prairie View,” said Marty Taylor, IMS head basketball coach about the second game of the Burlington Middle School tournament.
Prairie View outscored Iola 10-5 in the fourth quarter to come from behind for a 25-23 win. Iola had wiped out a 4-1 deficit with an 11-8 run in the second quarter.
The teams were tied 12-12 at halftime. The Ponies put up six points in the third while holding the Buffalos to three points.
Jo Lohman fired in 11 points and had one rebound for Iola. Emma Piazza had three points and four rebounds.
Scoring two points each were Lexi Long, Kyra Moore, Addie Haar and Emmalee Seabolt. Katie Shields had one point. Seabolt had three rebounds.
The eighth-grade lost 34-3 to Burlington in the first game of the day. Piazza had two points and two rebounds. Moore had one point and four rebounds.
Iola’s seventh-grade girls weren’t able to record a win in the tournament.
Burlington led Iola 15-8 at halftime then outscored the Ponies 11-4 in the second half to secure a 26-12 win.
Hannah Ingle pulled down 10 rebounds and scored three points for Iola. Taylor Sell had six rebounds and one point.
Ashlie Shields scored four points. Mikaela Platt and Micaiah Larney each had two points.
Iola and Prairie View went toe-to-toe for three quarters. The Ponies led 13-10 at halftime and the teams were tied 17-17 by the end of the third quarter. Prairie View finished the game with a 20-2 run for a 37-19 win.
“The girls played well for five of eight quarters on the day. We couldn’t put four quarters together,” Taylor said.
Ingle had 14 rebounds and three points while Sell tossed in nine points and had six rebounds.
Platt put in four points and Shields had two. Makayli Cleaver had one point.
Iola hosts Pittsburg on Thursday.
