MORAN — In a game filled with all kinds of offense, turnovers proved more than troublesome for Marmaton Valley High.
The Wildcats lost only two fumbles against visiting Marais Des Cygnes Valley High Friday, but both came inside the Trojan 15-yard line.
Meanwhile, MDCV kept up its scoring from start to finish in a 56-38 win.
The loss drops Marmaton Valley to 2-2 as the Wildcats embark next week on Kansas Eight-Man, District 2 play. Marmaton Valley travels to Yates Center on Friday.
“The turnovers hurt us,” Wildcat head coach Kent Houk said. “No excuses. We have to play better.”
Marais Des Cygnes raced to a 24-16 halftime lead, increasing its advantage to 36-16 at intermission.
Marmaton Valley could get no closer than 12 points in the second half, when Cole Becker scored on a 20-yard touchdown run late in the fourth period.
The Wildcats lost despite returning two Trojan kickoffs for touchdown, and rolling up 322 yards of total offense.
Cole Becker led the way with 153 yards on 18 carries, two of which went for touchdowns. Daylen Houk added 63 yards rushing and a 70-yard kickoff return for a score, while racking up 18 tackles and a quarterback sack on defense. Becker had 16 tackles.
Zach English completed 4 of 10 passes for 102 yards, including three connections with Lucas Hamlin covering 85 yards.
Caleb Stroud recovered a fumble and Jimmy Frye pulled in an interception for the Wildcats on defense.
