Iola seventh-grade distance specialist Trenton Varney has been on a tear in recent meets and that run of success continued Tuesday when Iola hosted its Pioneer Meet.
Varney won the 800 meters and the 1600 meters with a 2:33.36 in the 800 and a 5:15.73 time in the 1600 meters.
Varney wasn’t the only standout among the seventh-grade boys.
Iola took the top three spots in the 200-meter dash with Kolton LaCrone winning with a 27:07 and Brett Willis and Evan Casner finishing right behind him.
Willis wasn’t done there though. He picked up a gold for himself in the long jump with a 15’3”.
The Ponies’ were also a force to be reckoned with in the seventh-grade boys relays, winning the 4×200 meters and the medley relay.
The seventh-grade girls saw two competitors earn first-place medals.
Josie Plumlee was able to cruise to a fairly easy victory in the 1,600 meters with a time of 6:22.09 — 29 seconds faster than the runner-up.
Hannah Dorsey earned the squad’s other gold with a 19.82 to win the 100-meter hurdles.

EIGHTH GRADE
Jack Adams picked up the only gold of the day for the Iola eighth grade by winning the 3,200-meter run with a 11:53.18 — a minute and 23 seconds faster than the runner-up.
The Iola eighth-grade girls were shutout of the top podium spots, but had strong performances from Averie Sharon and Aliyah Blazek.
Blazek took second in the 200-meter dash while Sharon was the runner-up in the 3,200 meters.
