MORAN — It was step in the right direction, but not enough to find the victory column.
Marmaton Valley High’s boys raised their level of play considerably over a season-opening loss last week, according to head coach Denny Lasley.
But visiting Oswego High was on hand to weather any and all challenges Marmaton Valley could muster Tuesday, defeating the Wildcats 46-35.
The defeat came in the first round of Marmaton Valley’s preseason tournament. The Wildcats (0-2) play Northeast High of Arma Thursday in the second round of the round-robin tournament.
“We’ve got a long ways to go, but we played much better tonight,” Lasley said.
Oswego connected twice from three-point range early in the second quarter to erase an 8-7 Wildcat advantage. The Indians led 18-17 at the break and forged ahead 29-23 by the end of the third quarter.
Dalton Houk led Marmaton Valley with 15 points, while Landon Hammond followed with 10 points and eight rebounds. Cole Becker chipped in with eight points and eight boards. Zach Louk had four steals and four assists.
Kyle Wimp paced Oswego with 13 points, followed by Lane Martin and Ryan Shields with 10 apiece.
