MORAN — Marmaton Valley High’s girls squad sent their seniors out in style Thursday night.
The Wildcats took full control with dominating second and third quarters to break open a close game against Northeast High of Arma.
“We ended the game with our seniors on the court,” Wildcat head coach Kent Houk said as Marmaton Valley dispatched the Vikings 45-31. “It worked out very well.”
The key to the victory was Marmaton Valley’s defense, Houk said. The Wildcats began with a press, then they switched to a full-court man-to-man and finally a zone trap.
“We got some good scoring opportunities from that,” Houk said.
The Wildcats outscored Northeast 13-4 in the second period, part of a larger 23-10 run that spanned the second and third periods. By the end of the third, the Wildcats were on top 36-22.
And in the half-court offense, Marmaton Valley deployed a backdoor strategy that paid off handsomely for senior Cheyanne Miller.
Miller poured in 24 points — most coming from backdoor passes that led to open layups, Houk said.
Another senior, Jamee McEndree, added eight points with five steals. A third senior, Maggie Meiwes, pulled in 12 rebounds. Kailey Boyd also had five steals.
Shelby Layman paced Northeast with 11 points.
