COLONY — Marmaton Valley High School was victorious in a 50-0 win over Crest High School on Friday night. The Wildcats moved to 2-0 while the Lancers fell to 1-1.
“I think everybody played really good,” Wildcat running back Trevor Wilson said. “Everybody blocked really good. All the blockers had a good game. All the tight ends did a good job on hooking, they just did good.”
Marmaton Valley was off to a strong start from the beginning with 22 points in the first quarter. There were three touchdown runs by Wilson, where the last one he was on the end of an option play.
The second quarter was more of the same. Caiden Elliott scored a touchdown and Wilson added two more to make it 44-0 at halftime.
It was a tough outing for the Lancers, who failed to force a punt or change of possession on defense.
“Marmaton Valley is a very physical team,” Crest head coach Brandt Miller said. “It didn’t matter what either team ran tonight. Offensively or defensively, it made no difference. They beat us every snap. I saw them physically beat us all night. They could run whatever they wanted and we didn’t contact them for five or six yards deep, and you can’t do that in football.”
The Wildcats continued to dominate in the second half. Crest received the ball, but went three-and-out and was forced to punt.
It was a slow death. The Wildcats methodically ran the ball. A 2-yard keeper by quarterback Justic Pugh ended the game with 5:21 left in the third quarter.
“I was excited on how we played. We did a great job blocking,” Elliott said. “We wouldn’t be able to do that without our offensive line. Those holes were perfect, cutbacks were great and everything was just fantastic. The defense stepped up our game and filled the holes.:
Elliott said the team was playing with a chip on its shoulder because the Wildcast were picked to finish second-to-last place in the league. They’re motivated after losing the league title game last year.
The Wildcats are coming off back-to-back shutouts. They won 68-0 last week against Chetopa. Head coach Gavin Cole said it was a goal to not allow points by the opposition.
“I was happy with the way we came out and played,” Cole said. “What we prepared for and what we saw on film from the first weekend was exactly what we saw on defense. I don’t have many complaints. There was a few things, but I’m sure when I watch film I’ll have quite a few more.”
For Crest, it will be back to the drawing board when the Lancers take on Waverly next week. Miller hopes to retrace the steps and move forward in what was a tough loss.
“We have a big game against Waverly next week and I know they’ll be good and be physical,” Miller said. “We’ll just have to learn from this one I don’t want to forget it.”
Next week will be the home opener for MVHS and Cole said the team is motivated from last year’s 54-0 loss on the road, the largest margin of defeat last season.
“I think we’ll enjoy the win tonight and we’ll break down film and see where you can correct teams,” Cole said. “My focus is going to Greenfield right away. They embarrassed us last year. These kids don’t like being embarrassed and they don’t take well to that. We’re going after that one and it’s our first home game of the year, so we’re excited for the opportunity.”
