GARNETT — Iola High’s Fillies found themselves being pushed out of their game early Thursday night. Not until they were looking up at a 12-point deficit did the Fillies begin to settle down.
Burlington High’s Wildcats used full-court pressure early and effectively in a 44-31 win. The loss for the Fillies came in the second round of the Anderson County High Invitational tournament.
“Burlington has always done that — try to get you out of your game. We really weren’t having trouble getting up court against the press but we weren’t comfortable and couldn’t get into positions we wanted to be in,” said Becky Carlson, Fillies head coach.
“Once we settled down we played pretty well. But we were playing from behind and good teams are comfortable playing with leads.”
With the second loss in two rounds of tournament play, the Fillies play for fifth place this afternoon. They return to the small confines of Ralph Meyer Gym at Garnett Elementary School to play against host Anderson County at 4 o’clock.
Burlington got out to a 13-1 lead by the 2:37 mark of the first quarter. It was up 15-4 at the end of the period.
The Fillies found their game a bit down 17-6 as Kayla Callahan scored down low twice and Maggie Wilson scored. Iola trailed by seven, 19-12.
But a bug-a-boo for the Fillies all night was free throw shooting. They were 8 of 22 at the line.
“We missed enough one-and-ones in the first half to be about even with them,” Carlson said.
It ended up 23-14 at the break. Burlington came out with a 9-2 run on its way to a 19-12 scoring advantage in the third quarter.
The Fillies held the Wildcats to two points in the fourth quarter. They couldn’t come up with a big run, only five points.
“Kendra (Taiclet) and Kayla played well tonight. We just need to get everybody playing well at the same time,” Carlson said.
Taiclet scored 14 points and had six rebounds. Callahan tossed in 12 points and had six rebounds. Maggie Wilson had three steals and two assists.
Iola turned the ball over 20 times. The Fillies shot 11 of 31, 35 percent, from the field.
Madison Stewart fired in 16 points for Burlington. The Wildcats were just 5 of 14 at the free-throw line.
