YATES CENTER — The Yates Center softball team fell behind early in their first game against Caney Valley on Thursday night in Yates Center and they weren’t able to recover.
Yates Center senior Emily Proper gave up two runs in the first inning.
The Wildcats got back within 2-1 in the second inning, but a five-run fourth inning followed by a three-run sixth was too much for the Wildcats to handle. Caney Valley got the 10-3 win.
Proper surrendered seven earned runs on 11 hits in her seven innings on the mound.
Katelynn Jones led the Wildcats with two hits in the first game.
GAME TWO
The second game was a back and forth affair with Caney Valley’s three-run sixth inning turning an 8-6 deficit into a 9-8 victory.
Errors hurt the Wildcats. Freshman pitcher Maddie Collins surrendered just two earned runs in her seven innings, but the defense committed six errors leading to the seven additional runs.
Emma Chrisman and Hali Crellin each had two hits to lead Yates Center’s offense.
Jones had the only extra-base hit of the day for the Wildcats with a double.
