MORAN — There wasn’t much doubt in Monday’s outcome for Marmaton Valley High’s boys.
The Wildcats erupted for 27 first-quarter points, scoring the game’s first 21, almost exclusively with layups, against visiting Altoona-Midway.
It only got worse from there for the visiting Jets.
The Wildcats led 45-9 at the half and 69-14 after three periods.
By the time the buzzer sounded, Marmaton Valley’s reserves had racked up plenty of playing time in a 77-20 romp for the Wildcats’ third win of the season.
“It was good to be able to sub a lot,” Marmaton Valley head coach Tim Stinnett said. “We’ve had to rely mainly on our starting five for most of our games this season.”
There were no such issues Tuesday after the Wildcat starters staked themselves to a huge lead.
Chance Stevenson and Brady Newman were the two catalysts early, scoring eight apiece.
There was no letting up in the second period. Newman scored six more, and his teammates hit 8 of 12 free throws to take a 36-point lead into halftime.
Newman wound up with a game-high 21, all by the end of the third quarter. Stevenson, too, scored all of his 14 points by the time the fourth period started. Gage Adams also scored 14, Joey Jefferis had nine and Micheal Genn had seven.
Tanner Engelman scored seven and Michael Carroll six to pace the Jets.
Marmaton Valley wraps up the regular season at home Thursday against West Franklin. The 2014 Class 1A, Division I substate playoffs begin next week.
First-round matchups will be announced Wednesday.
