BURLINGAME — Marmaton Valley High’s baseball team struggled in all phases Thursday in losing twice to host Burlingame, 15-0 and 10-0.
“We took a big step back in this doubleheader,” Wildcat head coach Derek Scharff said. “We fielded the ball poorly and gave up a lot of extra-base hits that should have been singles.”
Burlingame led 5-0 after one, 9-0 after two and ended the game via run rule with a six-run third.
Greg Neria allowed three walks and four hits, while the Wildcats committed five errors.
Marmaton Valley didn’t get a hit in three innings at the plate.
“We watched a lot of strikes go by,” Scharff said. “We struck out looking way too many times.”
Colton Alexander started in game two, allowing three hits in four innings. He walked two and hit four batters. Gage Adams allowed a hit with two walks in a third of an inning.
Burlingame led 3-0 after one inning and 4-0 after two. A four-run fourth put the game away.
“Colton pitched a good game,” Scharff said. “He struggled with command at times, but worked through it. Gage came in and struggled throwing strikes.”
Jake Kress, Chris Bowman and Mike Beggs all had singles.
“We still watched too many third strikes go by,” Scharff said. “We had some opportunities to score some runs. They made some good plays on balls we hit to the outfield that would have put some runs on the board.
“We need to get a few more guys in to pitch to get some experience,” he continued. “We have a lot of work to do.”
Marmaton Valley resumes play Monday at home against Uniontown.
