CHANUTE — Iola High’s boys tennis season is nearing the end of the season and they’re going out strong.
Both Colby Works and Isaiah Fawson finished Monday 3-0.
Works, Iola’s no. 1 singles player, started the day with an 8-5 win against Labette’s Caleb Matheis. He then beat Neodesha’s Daynin Broderick 8-0 and Chanute’s Daniel Benavides 8-0.
Fawson, Iola’s no 2. singles player, had similar results. He started with an 8-4 win against Labette’s Aaron McCoach. That was followed by 8-0 wins against Neodesha’s Blake Rodriguez and Chanute’s Fisher Lund.
Iola’s doubles teams went 1-2 each.
The no. 1 pairing of Mason Key and Rhett Allen defeated Neodesha’s Sean Albin and Korey Blecha 8-5. They lost 8-7 — with a tiebreaker of 7-5 — to Labette’s Dylan Waugh and Devin Philbrick. The tandem lost 8-2 to Chanute’s Drake Gilmore and Zane Wyrick. Columbus also beat the pair 8-5.
Iola’s no. 2 doubles team of Glenn Thomas and Connor Farrell defeated Labette’s Robbie Gibbs and Issac Payne 8-1. The team then lost 8-7 in an 11-9 tiebreaker to Columbus’ Pete Westervelt and Tim Eppler. They also lost 8-5 to Labette and 8-0 to Chanute.
The team returns to Chanute on Friday to end the regular season. Works will also play in a tournament on Saturday in Salina. Class 4A regionals start on May 8 at Parsons High School.
