YATES CENTER — Donnie Bennett is 1/10th of a second off the Yates Center High school record time in the 300-meter intermedidate hurdles. Bennett ran a personal best of 40.9 seconds for first in last week’s Yates Center High Invitational.
Bennett also won the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.9 seconds. He was third in the high jump, clearing the bar at 5 feet, 4 inches.
“Our kids did a great job at home last week,” said Dan Berg, Yates Center head track coach. “We are small ( in numbers) but this is a great group of kids who work hard.”
Berg said the YCHS coaching staff wanted to thank all the workers and people from Yates Center schools and community who helped make the meet successful.
Dylan Sicka had a four-gold medal day for Yates Center. He won the 1600-meter run in 4 minutes, 56 seconds, the 3200-meter run in 11:30 and the 800-meter run in 2:08.
Sicka teamed up with Bennett, Brent Rice and Sam Aguirre to win the 4×400-meter relay race in 3:51. Aguirre was fourth in the high hurdles in a personal-best time of 19.1 seconds. He placed fourth in the 400-meter dash in 60.6 seconds.
In field events, Rice was fourth in the high jump at 5’4”. Berg said Aguirre had a personal-best 17’2” leap in the long jump but didn’t place. Also C.J. Stiffler had personal bests in the shot put (34’6”) and javelin (99’11”).
Brae Adams captured the gold medal in the girls’ discus with a throw of 100’6”. Paige Steinforth won the long jump with a distance of 13’3”.
In the high jump, Cherokee Shaffer was third at 4’8” followed by teammates Haley Bedel in fourth and Steinforth in fifth, both at 4’6”.
Shaffer won the 200-meter dash and Steinforth ran a personal-best time of 68.5 seconds to win the 400-meter dash. Bedel was fourth in the 300-meter hurdles in 59.6 seconds.
Steinforth, Bedel, Shaffer and Samie Hatch combined to take second in the 4×100-meter relay race. The Wildcats’ time was 59.1 seconds.
Yates Center goes to the Fredonia Relays on Friday.
