YATES CENTER — Cherryvale High’s Lady Chargers had the stronger first half against Yates Center High’s Wildcats Friday.
The Wildcats ended up facing a 21-10 halftime deficit. It was too much to come back from as they lost the championship game 48-39 at the 2010 Wildcat Winter Classic.
“We could not get the ball in the basket in the first half. We played pretty well defensively in the second half,” said Abbie Collins, Wildcat head coach.
Cherryvale used a 13-5 run in the second quarter to stretch its’ 8-5 first-quarter lead.
Yates Center closed the gap to four, 29-25, by the end of the third quarter.
“We have to find a way to sustain our offense for four quarters,” Collins said.
The Lady Chargers were able to hold off the Wildcats in the fourth quarter. They outscored the Wildcats 19-14.
Drew Spencer paced Yates Center with 11 points. Cherokee Shaffer added 10 points plus had six rebounds.
Jessica Hartwig controlled six rebounds and had four steals.
Cherryvale got 17 points from Mary Reilly and 10 from Hallie Davis.
Yates Center (1-2) hosts Neodesha in Tri-Valley League play Tuesday.
