Youngsters playing in the Allen County Youth Tackle Football League will think pink Tuesday for breast cancer awareness.
Because all of the Iola teams will be at home — the two teams in both the grades 3-4 and grades 5-6 divisions will play each other — organizers thought it an ideal opportunity to develop a special activity for the night.
At halftime of their respective games, the players will hand out pink carnations to somebody they know who has been affected by breast cancer, either in honor of a survivor or in memory of someone who has succumbed to the disease.
“This person can be a relative, neighbor, teacher or friend,” organizer Josh Oberley said.
Players who do not know of anybody with cancer are asked to call Oberley at 365-9742 and he can designate a recipient for them.
The carnations will be provided free of charge by Duane’s Flowers of Iola. Owners Duane and Judy McGraw will be special guests for the night.
In addition to the pink flowers, a drawing for six Kansas City Chiefs football tickets will be held at halftime of the fifth- and sixth-grade games. Proceeds will go toward the cost of a new blocking sled and tackling dummies the league purchased earlier this year. The players who sold the most tickets will be rewarded with special prize, Oberley said. The tickets are for the Oct. 20 Chiefs game against the Houston Texans.
