OSAWATOMIE — The Humboldt Lady Cubs ended the regular season with a 15-6 victory over Osawatomie during Friday’s road doubleheader.
After falling in the first game 11-8 in extra innings, the Lady Cubs rebounded with a blowout, as they now turn their sights on the regional tournament.
Junior pitcher Jo Ellison took the loss in the opener. She ended the night with a team-leading six strikeouts in a complete-game effort, but allowed 11 runs on 12 hits and six walks.
After going scoreless in the first and second innings, Humboldt finally lit up the scoreboard with an RBI grounder from junior catcher Leah Carman, then added three more runs off a homer by senior shortstop Laney Hull, who had a team-leading five RBIs while successful in 3 of 5 at-bats.
Still in the third inning, junior outfielder Hadlee Galloway added another run with an RBI single.
An RBI triple by Hull in the sixth, an RBI grounder by Galloway in the seventh and another homer by Hull kept Osawatomie at arm’s distance.
But even with a 5-0 lead, the Lady Cubs were not out of the proverbial woods.
The Trojans scored five runs in the seventh inning to tie the game, then four more in the eighth to win 11-8, extending the Lady Cubs’ losing streak to four.
Hull tied junior third baseman Lakyn Meadows in hits with three each. Sophomore outfielder Addisyn Drake and junior outfielder Kamry De La Torre had two hits each.
AS OSAWATOMIE focused on stopping Hull in the finale, Meadows, De La Torre and Carman more than filled the void allowing Humboldt to walk away with a blowout, 15-6.
A De La Torre RBI single put the Lady Cubs on the scoreboard in the opening frame, but the brunt of their damage came in the middle to later innings. Humboldt added three more runs in the third off a two-RBI Carman double, then an RBI single from Hull.
Capitalizing on throwing errors from the Trojans’ pitcher, the Lady Cubs added runs in the fourth off a pair of wild pitches and an RBI single from Meadows for a 9-2 advantage. Humboldt added two more runs in the sixth inning, resulting from a dropped third strike and an RBI grounder from Meadows.
De La Torre, Meadows and junior outfielder Carlie Weilert all but sealed the victory with a trio of RBI singles in the seventh.
Freshman Jadey Ellis picked up the win after tallying four strikeouts over seven innings while allowing six runs on 12 hits and two walks.
Meadows had a team-leading three RBIs, followed by Carman and De La Torre with two each.
Hull, De La Torre and Drake had two hits each.
