5 The IHS Mustangs are the champions of the Southeast Kansas Basketball League. The team defeated the Independence Bulldogs in the Iola stadium last night to clinch the title, 39-33. It was the first time in league history that Iola won the title. A crowd of about 1,300 squeezed into the Riverside Park community building grandstands to see the new champs crowned. A team picture included Coach Leo Burger and these players: William Taylor, Fred Kipp, John Elliott, Jim Remsberg, Don Bain, Bob Lacy, Rodney Myer, Gerald Sicka, Bob Baker and Herb Trout.
18 The Mustangs squeezed by Wamego, 41-39, to enter the semi-finals.
19 Defending champion Buhler played 100 percent championship basketball and knocked Iola out of the state title running with a commanding 52-37 drubbing of the Mustangs.
21 Iola secured third place by cuffing Sacred Heart of Salina, 62-31.
