CHANUTE — Funeral services are Wednesday for Carlie Sue Almond, 15, a Chanute High School sophomore who died of a sudden illness Thursday.
The Chanute Tribune reported Almond had not been feeling well for several days and had been diagnosed with bronchitis earlier in the week and given medication.
Her mother, Amy Almond, told the newspaper that Carlie’s condition had not improved when she attended a basketball practice session earlier Thursday. A teammate took her home from practice because Almond was feeling so poorly. The same teammate then took her to Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center’s emergency room.
“They did everything they could,” Amy Almond told the Tribune, “but they couldn’t save her.”
Amy Almond said doctors suspect a blood clot had moved from her leg into her lungs, resulting in a pulmonary embolism.
An autopsy has been performed.
“She was just a fantastic young lady,” USD 413 Superintendent of Schools Richard Proffitt told the Tribune. “She was active in a lot of different activities and in the community. It’s a tremendous loss for our district, and our thoughts and prayers go out to her family.”
“Carlie was an amazing kid,” said Dustin Fox, Chanute High girls head basketball coach. “She was friends with everyone and was a light in everyone’s day. She always had a smile and a great laugh. She was a very unique and special part of the program.”
The Chanute girls basketball team is scheduled to host Labette County Tuesday.
