YATES CENTER A guilty conscience ended a search for the third of three Woodson County Jail inmates who escaped custody Thursday.
Woodson County Sheriff Wayne Faulkner said Jordan Stout, 29, Yates Center, turned himself into authorities Friday morning, and in so doing, returned a pickup he had stolen as part of the escape.
Stout was one of three inmates, along with Jeremiah Cartright, hometown unknown, and Storm Acklin, Yates Center, who kicked open a fire escape door as they were being transferred from a cell into a bullpen area within the jail complex, Faulkner said, and raced away from the building.
Deputies were joined by Yates Center police officers in pursuit.
Acklin and Cartright were apprehended not long after the escape, Faulkner said, in a house about a block away from the jail, where one of the two was apparently in a relationship with the occupant.
We thought they might have headed there, Faulkner said.
After the first surrendered to officers, deputies were told the second inmate was hiding inside the home. He was found in the attic, and also surrendered without incident.
Stout had other intentions.
He knew the owner of a 2001 Chevy pickup, and just as importantly, knew where the owner kept the vehicles keys, Faulkner said.
Stout allegedly stole the pickup, sparking an overnight manhunt throughout much of Woodson County.
Stout wasnt found until this morning, when he returned the pickup to his owner, who called police.
The deputy said he was apologizing about it, Faulkner said.
Cartright and Acklin were returned to the Woodson County Jail. Stout was transferred to the Allen County Jail in Iola.
Acklin and Cartright both were in custody on warrants stemming from unrelated charges.
Stout had been arrested earlier in the week for suspicion of disorderly conduct, Faulkner said.
In the immediate aftermath of the escape, Yates Centers schools were placed in lockdown until law enforcement could arrive at each building, which delayed the dismissal time for about 45 mnutes.
