GARNETT — Garnett voters will decide in the November election the fate of a 1% sales tax proposal to fund a new swimming pool and improvements to the city’s recreational facilities and other park infrastructure.
The tax would generate an estimated $600,000 annually, and would be in place for 15 years, depending on a sunset clause which could prompt the city to either shorten or lengthen the time the tax is collected, the Anderson County Review reported.
The City of Garnett’s website detailed the specifics of the proposal, which would entail:
• a pool with a zero-gravity entry and splash pad elements, as well as new diving boards, slides and improved infrastructure
• sports complex enhancements with improved drainage and turf
• modern, accessible restrooms at both North and South Lake Park locations
• new playground equipment for multiple age groups
• new electric camping pedestals to accommodate RV visitors
• energy-efficient LED lighting for the spring track to allow evening events
• general park improvements in picnic areas, pathway repairs and improved seating
If approved, Garnett’s sales tax rate would be 9%, according to the city’s website.
