WICHITA — Terika Henry’s blazing 400-meter dash run set a new school record Saturday for Allen Community College.
Henry’s time of 55.62 seconds was a personal best as well, and was good enough for fifth overall at Wichita State University’s KT Woodman Classic.
She was hardly the only Allen standout in the competition, which featured a mixture of NCAA division I, Division II NAIA and junior college athletes.
Allen qualified three runners for nationals in the 5000-meter run.
Dakota Parker’s time of 15 minutes, 28.31 seconds, took 12th overall, followed right behind by Ryan Pulsifer’s 15:32.32, good for 14th. Brock Artis, at 15:34.14, also qualified.
Just as impressively, ACC had five runners under the 16-minute mark in the 5000, “which is kind of the gold standard at this level,” Coach Vince DeGrado said.
“Not to look too far ahead, but we have five out of the six returners for cross country under 16 minutes, which gets you excited about where they can develop,” he continued.
Michael Burns exploded for a personal-best leap of 48 feet, 8 inches in the triple jump, good for third overall and qualified him for nationals.
Denae McGee also qualified for nationals with her 1500-meter run time of 4:51.06, good for 12th overall. Tegan Michael finished 16th in the men’s 1500, but missed his qualifying mark by 1 second.
“He didn’t run a smart race and let the pack get away from him and had to make up too much ground,” DeGrado said.
Michael also narrowly missed qualifying in the 800-meter time. He finished seventh at 1:56.41.
“This time, he ran a very tactical smart race because of the windy weather conditions,” DeGrado said.
Gabby Ruiz ran a season’s best time of 18:15.95 in the women’s 5000.
“Overall, that 5k crew ran very well,” DeGrado said.
The athletes had “great weather for distance running” on Friday, and windy conditions Saturday, DeGrado said.
The Allen athletes will be at the Kansas Relays, which open today and run through Saturday in Lawrence.
