KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Mark James was only slightly exaggerating when he said Allen Community College’s women came away with “possibly the ugliest win in the history of college basketball” Wednesday.
But adding another notch in the victory column by defeating Kansas City, Kan., Community College 42-33 was big in multiple ways.
“We battled our tails off,” James said. “In what has been a pleasant trend, our defense has continued to get better and better over the past couple of weeks.”
The Red Devils won despite shooting an ice-cold 11 for 27 from the free throw line, while committing 17 turnovers.
“We truly did struggle offensively,” James said.
The game started promisingly enough. The Red Devils nearly doubled up KCK’s output, to the tune of a 29-15 lead at intermission.
But the Red Devils found offensive efficiency hard to come by in the second half.
They allowed only 18 points to the Blue Devils, while scoring only 13 after the break.
The Red Devils shot at a 25 percent clip, and went 5 for 22 from 3-point range.
DaNara Day led the way with 16 points, while Ronsha Hall had nine points. Leslie Ware followed with eight points and nine rebounds. Miracle Davis had 11 rebounds and five assists.
Alexandria Blaurock scored nine points and 14 rebounds to pace the Blue Devils.
The Red Devils limited Kansas City to 17 percent shooting (12 of 72) from the field and an even worse 2 of 25 from 3-point range (12 percent). The Blue Devils turned the ball over 15 times.
The win puts Allen at 11-8 overall and 4-3 in Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division play.
“This was a big win for us, and puts us where where we need to be in the conference standings,” James said.
Allen hosts Cowley this afternoon at 2 o’clock to begin “arguably our toughest stretch of the season,” James said.
Following Cowley’s visit, ACC will take on Johnson County, Highland and Independence.
