KANSAS CITY, Kan. — It took the Allen Community College women’s soccer team all of four games to top its 2012 victory total. OSCAR MARRUFO got the Red Devil men started with a penalty kick goal. Corey Hudson scored a goal with an assist from Bon Loflin.
The Red Devils continued their early-season roll, even while struggling with the heat Saturday.
A pair of familiar names already, Lexi Godlove and Kyleigh Rowe, scored second-half goals for the Red Devils in a 3-1 win over Kansas City, Kan.
The Red Devil men were not as fortunate, dropping a 4-3 heartbreaker to KCK in overtime.
In the women’s contest, Raegan Vigola found Savvy Fairall in front of the net midway through the first half. Fairall punched the ball past the goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead.
Kansas City scored later the half to tie it at 1-1 at intermission.
That’s when Allen’s offense began to click, head coach Jeremy McGinnis said.
“We were a little frustrated in the first half,” he said. “We had opportunities, but weren’t able to take advantage.”
Godlove scored quickly in the second half. Rowe followed shortly thereafter to seal the win.
Keelie Arbuckle pulled in nine saves at goal.
The game was played in searing, 100-degree heat, on turf that was several degrees hotter.
“We didn’t play well, and we have some things to polish up, but to get a conference win is always good,” McGinnis said.
The three wins top last year’s win total, during which ACC went 2-15-1.
“The girls have really bought into the program,” McGinnis said. “We know we still need to get better to compete with some of the top programs in our conference. We have two of the top 15 teams in the nation.”
Allen’s third goal of the match came when one of the KCK defenders tried to clear the ball from the Blue Devils’ end of the field, but hit the back of one of his teammates, forcing the ball back into the KCK net.
The Allen squads are on the road Thursday at Maple Woods Community College.
