ACCC track teams begin indoor season

LINCOLN — Allen County Community College’s athletes opened the 2011 indoor track season last weekend at the University of Nebraska Holiday Inn Invitational.
Sophomore Kyran Stewart had the top performance of the day. Stewart finished third in the men’s 60-meter dash in 6.88 seconds. He ran 6.86 seconds in the preliminaries.
Freshman Chris Henry was 13th in 7.06 seconds and sophomore Terrance Brooks placed 30th, 7.25 seconds. John Thompson, a freshman, was 46th in 7.63.
Sophomore Trent Huling claimed fourth in the men’s 400-meter dash in 49.1 seconds. His time was an NJCAA national meet qualifying one. John Thurston, sophomore, came in 10th in 50.65 seconds.
Also in the 400, sophomore Zachery Baldwin was 16th and freshman Darrlyn Bennett was 38th.
Huling, Stewart and Bennett combined with freshman Brandon Miller to place 10th in the 4×400-meter relay race. The Red Devil foursome posted a time of 3 minutes, 24.71 seconds.
Sophomore Olnel Virgil ran the 60-meter hurdles in a personal-best 6.68 seconds to take 10th. DeMario Johnson, a freshman, was 12th in the 200-meter dash in 22.76 seconds with sophomore Abraham Walker in 16th at 23.02.
In the 600-yard run, Miller placed 13th at 1:16.31 with sophomore Bryant Terry in 14th at 1:16.47 and freshman Jesse Jenkins in 22nd at 1:17.63.
Patrick Johnson, a freshman, was 33rd in the mile run in 5:26. Freshman Travis Venniro was 16th in the shot put at 41 feet, 1.75 inches.
The ACCC women had a tough day.
Freshman Audre’Ahna Harris was 16th in the 60-meter hurdles in 10.12 seconds, missing the finals by one spot. Harris finished 30th in the 400-meter dash in 1:10.17.
Nakita Casey and Kasie House, both freshmen, ran the 60-meter dash. Casey was 24th in 8.42 seconds and House was 30th in 8.72 seconds.
In the 200-meter dash, Casey took 33rd in 29.21 seconds, sophomore Akilah Threadgill was 34th in 29.50 seconds and House was 35th in 29.98 seconds.
Bridget Sears, a sophomore, placed 21st in the shot put with a throw of 32’7.75”.
The Red Devil track team goes to Ames, Iowa, for a meet hosted by Iowa State this weekend.
