A quick start didn’t ignite the fire Allen County Community College Red Devil volleyball team needed Wednesday night.
The Red Devils opened the Jayhawk Eastern Division home match with Highland Community College’s Scotties with a four-point run. It was short-lived.
Highland got past Allen County in straight sets, 25-12, 25-22, 25-21.
“The great start that felt it would push us to a higher level mellowed out in set one,” said Jessica Peters, Red Devil head coach.
“We started each set well. We set a fast pace and got good starts. We just couldn’t sustain it.”
Peters said during the second set, Allen County began serving more aggressively and the defense was more active. She said the third set was the most “put together set for the team on the night.”
Nicole Rockhold pounded down 10 kills and had 18 digs. She also served an ace.
Andrea Miller working the middle had eight kills at the night plus two solo blocks. She also served an ace.
Morgan Scott came up with 20 digs. Karlee Bobbitt had 17 set assists and 10 digs. Erika Mack put up eight assists, had four digs and four kills.
Allison Jenicke racked up five kills and had eight digs. Leesha Plagens had two kills and a solo block.
Nicole Reed had five digs and Shelby Greenwood had two digs.
The Red Devils are 1-4 in conference play. They are 6-10 overall.
“The overpass attack was success for us in the match. We were scrappy enough to earn intense rallies throughout the third set,” Peters said.
Allen County plays in the Hesston College tournament Friday and Saturday in Hesston.
The Red Devils will host Independence next Wednesday in Jayhawk East play. The match starts at 6:30 p.m.
