Home wasn’t exactly sweet for Allen Community College’s volleyball team Wednesday evening.
Visiting Highland Community College took full advantage of just enough ACC mistakes, sweeping past the Red Devils in straight sets, 25-18, 25-17, 25-19.
The loss came in Allen’s home opener in front a boisterous crowd, most notably the school’s raucus student cheering section.
Red Devil head coach Jessica Peters was disppointed her team couldn’t give the supporters a better show.
“Highland played well, but it seemed like for every point they earned, we gave them two more,” Peters said. “We played with them at points, but we let them outwork and outsmart us.”
The visiting Scotties were particularly effective at the net. For every winner blasted into the Red Devil defense, Highland also sprinkled in a number of tips just beyond the reach of ACC’s inside hitters.
“They definitely found something they could use, and they continually exploited it,” Peters said.
Each of the three games was a virtual carbon copy.
Allen and Highland traded rallies early on before the Scotties would pull in front at about the 10-point mark, go on a handful of extended rallies and keep the Red Devils safely at arm’s length.
Peters praised the work of outside hitter Danielle Goodman, who led the Red Devils with 12 kills, nearly twice as many as anybody else on the team. Sidney Keith had seven.
“Danielle did a great job,” Peters said. “She proved she could be consistently effective out there, but she was the only one who did.”
Adriee Munoz added 12 set assists and two service aces. Jessie Sennett added nine assists and Ashlyn Myers six. Sennett had 18 digs, Keith 12 and Munoz 11.
“We loved the support, and not just from the students,” Peters said. “We want to thank everybody from the community who came out.”
The loss drops ACC to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in Jayhawk Conference play.
The Red Devils step out of conference on Friday and Saturday for a tournament in Marshalltown, Iowa. They’ll return to Iola for their busiest home stretch of the season.
Allen hosts Northeastern Oklahoma Monday, Hesston next Wednesday and the Allen Invitational Sept. 20 and 21 at the Recreation Community Building at Riverside Park. The homestand ends Sept. 23 against Longview.
