Wednesday night’s straight-set loss to Johnson County not withstanding, Allen Community College’s volleyball team’s 22-12 record has garnered individual attention to three Red Devils. SARAH Charbonneau, a sophomore from Corpus Christi, Texas, earned defensive player of the week honors for her performance in week 6, with wins over Long-view and Bacone in late September and a tough, five-set loss to nationally ranked Kansas City, Kan.
The most recent comes to freshman middle hitter Lizzy Huey, who was named KJCCC defensive player of the week for her performance Oct. 16. against Labette. Huey, a Bishop Ward High School graduate out of Kansas City, Kan., had 7.5 blocks.
The 6-foot freshman averages more than 1 block per set and has proven to be effective against her opponent’s power hitters.
She ranks 34th in the nation in blocks per set.
Charbonneau averaged more than 25 digs per match during the stretch, freeing up the Red Devil offense to position its other players elsewhere on the court.
Charbonneau is Allen’s defensive specialist or libero.
MEANWHILE, Sidney Keith, a sophomore out of St. Joseph, Mo., was named to the all-tournament team in three tournaments in which Allen participated this season, the Allen Invitational, the Coffeyville Spikefest and the Neosho Panther Invitational.
Keith leads Allen with 3.5 kills per set and more than 3.7 digs per set. She also leads Allen with more than 4 points per set.
