YATES CENTER — Along with the War on 54 in Iola this week, Marmaton Valley, Yates Center and Southern Coffey County will also go for tournament gold.
Play at the Yates Center Mid-Season Classic began Tuesday night as part of a four-team tournament including the Yates Center Wildcats, the Marmaton Valley Wildcats, the St. Paul Indians and the Oswego Indians.
The Yates Center Wildcats kicked off the tournament against rival Marmaton Valley with a JV game, a varsity girls contest and a varsity boys contest beginning at 4 p.m.
Yates Center will have a similar format when they host St. Paul Thursday and Oswego Friday.
The YCHS boys come into the tournament with a 5-5 record while YCHS girls have a 4-6 record. Neither team’s 2-3 Three Rivers League record will be impacted by this week’s tournament play.

Over in Buffalo, the Southern Coffey County Titans (0-11) and Lady Titans (0-11) hope to pick up their first wins while participating in the fourth annual Captain Milburn Memorial Basketball Tournament.
Tuesday’s opener will result in a first win for one of four teams participating as Chetopa’s boys and girls teams enter the contest without wins at 0-11. The Yates Center-based Liberty Home School Alliance Arrows boys (4-3) and girls (0-4) face the host Altoona-Midway boys (3-9) and AMHS girls (2-8) in the 6:30 p.m. finale.
