PLEASANTON — Uniontown High’s girls utilized a quick start to take control early in their opening round game Tuesday at the Pleasanton Blu-Jay Mid-Season Tournament.
The Lady Eagles led 9-2 after one quarter against Altoona-Midway High and never looked back in a 48-30 win.
“This was a good win for us,” Uniontown head coach Ken Holt said. “We didn’t shoot very well, but the girls played hard and did a lot of good things.”
Uniontown led 22-11 at halftime and 33-17 after three periods.
Breanna Esslinger led Uniontown with 15 points, all coming from hitting five of 12 three-pointers, while Heather Jurgenson followed with 10 points and nine rebounds. Hayden Rathbun added nine points and nine rebounds. Jennifer Ulrey and Tayler Shook both had three steals. Shook also had four assists.
Kelsey Spears led Al-toona-Midway with 16.
BOTH THE HUMBOLDT and Crest squads found points hard to come by in their games.
Humboldt fell to Prairie View 49-11. Crest dropped a 63-14 decision to Central Heights.
In the Humboldt contest, Prairie View led 14-2 after one period and 33-5 at the break.
The lead stood at 44-7 after three quarters.
Kindahl Young scored four to lead Humboldt. Mel-anie Sommer led Prairie View with nine.
There was no other information on the Crest game, aside from points scored for the Lady Lancers. Ashley Catt scored seven to lead Crest, followed by Katrina Strickler with five and Shalya Stephens with two.
IN THURSDAY’S second round action, Uniontown plays Central Heights in a championship semifinal. Humboldt takes on Pleas-anton and Crest plays Al-toona-Midway in consolation bracket games.
Times for Thursday’s games will be determined later today.
Placing games are Saturday in the two gyms at Pleasanton.
