HUMBOLDT — After putting up a strong showing in their season-opening loss to Southern Coffey County on Friday, the Crest girls basketball team regressed a bit in their 56-15 loss versus Erie in the opening day of the Emprise Bank tournament at Humboldt High School.
Nothing seemed to go right for the Lady Lancers as they hit just two field goals the entire night and struggled to stop the Lady Devils from getting just about anything they wanted on the offensive end.
“Yesterday we looked good in practice,” head coach Megan Mason said. “I know they can be a whole different team.”
The Lady Lancers went the entire first half without making a shot, scoring their five points from the free throw line.
While they came out of the second half better defensively holding Erie to just 16 points in the third and fourth quarter after giving up 19 and 20 points in the first two quarters — Crest couldn’t find any kind of offensive rhythm.
Juniors Camryn Strickler, Jewell Armstrong and freshman Aubree Holloran each had four points while junior Regan Godderz had three points. Strickler and Holloran led the way on the boards grabbing seven and six rebounds respectively.
When the final buzzer sounded, it was the kind of game that made first-year head coach Mason and her seven players take a step back and evaluate things.
“After the game, we met as a team and we went around and I said, ‘Okay, let’s start from scratch,’” Mason said. “Everybody struggled tonight so I had them all go around and say something that they needed to improve and then something positive because I didn’t way to end on a negative note. After we did that individually, we did it as a team and our positive was our free throw shooting.”
It doesn’t get any easier for the Lady Lancers. They’ll play host Humboldt on Thursday who is coming off of a defensive decimation of Uniontown.
“I told them that we have Wednesday to figure stuff out and then Thursday we need to come in and stick it to our next opponent,” Mason said.
Tip-off will be at 7 p.m.
