BURLINGTON — The Humboldt High baseball team needed only three innings to demolish Peabody Burns in the opening round Class 3A regional playoff game in Burlington Tuesday.
The Cubs (19-1) scored five runs in each of the first two innings and six in the third in a 16-0 blowout against the Trojans.
Trey Sommer started on the mound working 1.2 innings of shutout ball before Logan Page tossed the final 1.1 frames. Cubs Jacob Harrington and Mason Sterling each knocked in a team-high three runs to lead at the plate.
“We did exactly what we needed to do,” Humboldt head coach Mike Miller said. “We got off to a fast start and our pitchers were able to limit their pitch counts in order to stay eligible to throw on day two.”
Humboldt totaled 11 hits on 11 RBI’s and five walks while only striking out four times.
Colden Cook knocked a team-high three hits while Blake Ellis, Harrington and Sterling each had two hits to pace the Cubs. Sam Hull, Ellis and Cook each scored a team-high three runs while Sommer, Page and Harrington each scored two runs.
Sommer earned the win before Page struck out three and didn’t allow any hits.
“Council Grove will present some challenges,” said Miller regarding Wednesday’s matchup. “They have some good arms and a tough lineup for our pitchers to navigate. It will be a good game and we will have to play really well to advance.”
Humboldt took on Council Grove in the second round of the Class 3A regional playoffs on Wednesday afternoon. Results were not available at the time of publication.
