GARNETT — Murphy’s Law was in full effect at the start for Iola High’s girls.
Whatever could go wrong in the first quarter did, both on offense and defense.
Host Anderson County was stifling with its early pressure, creating numerous turnovers and missed shots inside for Iola.
Anderson County was hitting inside, outside and everywhere in between at the other end of the floor. The Lady Bulldogs scored the first 15 points of the contest.
Then, after Emery Driskel put Iola on the scoreboard, Anderson County closed the quarter with an 11-0 run.
The Lady Bulldogs never looked back, turnings their 26-2 lead into a 50-23 victory.
The loss drops Iola to 1-18 on the season, coming one game after the squad picked up its first win of 2013.
The Fillies wrap up regular season play Thursday at Osawatomie before embarking on the Class 4A substate playoffs; seedings were to be announced today. A rematch with Chanute High Tuesday is possible.
A stronger start than what Iola experienced Tuesday is paramount.
“We started out on our heels, and they were hitting,” Fillies coach Becky Carlson said. “I thought we did a better job in the second half of getting some good looks.”
Addie Haar came off the bench with a pair of baskets early in the second quarter to get Iola back on track. Hannah Endicott scored late in the half, and Kyra Moore’s 3-pointer shortly before the halftime buzzer made it 34-11 in Anderson County’s favor.
Emma Piazza scored about three minutes into the second half, followed shortly thereafter by a Driskel basket to cut the gap to 39-15. Driskel added a free throw in the fourth quarter before Jo Lohman banked in a 3-pointer.
Endicott then scored twice in the final 2:35, enough to give her a team-high six points on the evening. Driskel added five.
Cheyanne Ratliff was Iola’s primary antagonist, scoring 15 of the Lady Bulldogs’ 26 points. She wound up with 19. Jaime Mersman added 16.
In junior varsity action, Iola fell 47-16. Taylor Sell scored 12 of Iola’s 16 points. Ashlie Shields added another four.
In C team play, Anderson County prevailed 20-15 in a two-quarter game. Shields scored eight points, McKayli Cleaver chipped in with four, Sell had two and Taylor Heslop one.
