WICHITA — Ethan Fulton added to his state track meet hardware Friday by winning the Class 4A boys long jump.
The Iola High senior, competing in the long jump with twin brother, Aaron, captured gold with his leap of 22 feet, 41⁄2 inches.
The mark was one-quarter of an inch better than a leap of 22’41⁄4” by Skylar Hawkins of Paola High. Aaron Fulton’s jump of 20’7” was good for seventh overall.
Ethan Fulton, the defending 110-meter high hurdles champion, also carries the top qualifying mark in that event into today’s final. Fulton’s time of 15.06 seconds was a full half-second ahead of his nearest competitor. Aaron Fulton also qualified in the 110 hurdles by placing third in his heat with a mark of 15.71 seconds. Today’s finals in the hurdles begin at 10 a.m.
Also from Iola, Kelsey Larson pulled in the final qualifying spot in today’s finals of the girls 400-meter dash. Larson’s time in Friday’s preliminary round was 61.22 seconds, good for fifth in her heat and eighth-fastest overall. The final is scheduled to begin at 3:47 p.m.
Iola’s girls qualified in the 4×100-meter relay by recording a time of 50.74 seconds, fifth fastest overall in the preliminary round. The relay team members are Maggie Wilson, Kendra Taiclet, Kelsey Larson and Jazmyne Honeycutt. They race will begin this afternoon at 3:11.
The Iola boys 4×100 relay team fell short of qualifying when Dylan Allen, running the anchor leg, was slowed because of an apparent leg injury. The quartet of Allen, the Fultons and Shane Snavely recorded a time of 46.99 seconds.
Mindy Powelson had the ninth best throw in the girls javelin with a mark of 109 feet, 2 inches, but did not qualify for finals.
Darin Hutton had the 10th best throw in the boys discus with a mark of 134’, but did not qualify for finals.
Roman Yocham took 16th in the boys 3200-meter run with a time of 10 minutes, 35.80 seconds.
