WELLSVILLE — Iola Mustang wrestlers sophomore Addilyn Wacker, junior Zoie Hesse and freshman Kailyn Rodriguez continue making waves after placing at Thursday’s Aaron Patton Memorial Girls Wrestling Tournament.
The tournament attracted the region’s best wrestlers, and the championship matches did not disappoint, featuring multiple ranked participants.
At 190 lbs., Hesse rebounded from a second-place finish at the Burlington Invitational with a gold medal while part of a three-woman round-robin. She opened with a first-period pin of Uniontown junior Gabriell Basso (0-7), then dispatched the eventual tournament runner-up Rosalie Lewis (11-14) of 6A Gardner-Edgerton High School by first period pin before ending the evening with a first-period pin of Prairie View freshman Kinleigh Stiles (10-4).
In what may have been the most viewed match of the night, 3A No. 1 Addilyn Wacker took on 6A No. 2 Josie Clouse, a 23-3 sophomore from Gardner. Wacker received her first loss of the season after falling by second-period pin but seemed on a tear until that point. Wacker opened with a 4-1 decision over Prairie View junior Lexi Freeman (5-1), then pinned Baldwin sophomore Ivy Holloman in the first period to make it to the title match.
Iola’s freshman heavyweight Rodriguez took second in a six-woman round-robin. She opened with a second-period pin of Nemaha Central freshman Ayn Voracek (1-8), then pinned Central Heights junior Cayleigh Latimer (3-10) in the first period, then Santa Fe Trail senior Gabriell Suchi (8-15) in the second period, before falling to eventual champion Emmarsyn Fordham, an undefeated Onaga senior. Rodriguez rebounded with a first-period pin of Baldwin junior Maddy Cooper (5-4).
