YATES CENTER — Humboldt Middle School’s basketball teams ended the season with a number of sterling performances on the hardwoods.
The Lady Cubs Rylan Wilhite was especially dominant, ending the season with a triple double — 16 points, 11 rebounds and 13 steals — in a 40-29 win over Yates Center.
The Lady Cubs went 1-1 on the day, as did Humboldt’s boys.
Humboldt’s girls lost, 30-21, to Galesburg in Saturday’s opener.
On the boys side, Humboldt crushed Galesburg, 41-1, before falling, 45-24, to Yates Center.

“OBVIOUSLY, Rylan had an amazing game,” Lady Cub head coach Scott Brady said. “It was probably the best I have seen at the junior high level this year. She was all over the place on defense, and at one point she had six or seven steals in a row. But it was a total team effort.”
Kassie Angleton added seven points and nine rebounds. Aricah McCall, Maggie Johnson and Sydney Houk scored four points each. Chassis Hoepker added three points and five steals. Katie Malone added two points.
Humboldt won despite trailing 7-0 after one quarter and 14-12 at the half.
“We started slow — real slow,” Brady said. “But the girls came out and took control for the last three quarters..”
The Lady Cubs fell short in their opener against Galesburg, trailing 14-11, at the half.
“It was even most of the game until Galesburg made a lot of buckets in the third quarter,” Brady said.
Wilhite had eight points, six rebounds and seven steals. Houk added seven points and seven boards. McCall, Johnson and Angleton scored two apiece.

HUMBOLDT’S BOYS were in control from start to finish in their 40-point victory.
“We played great on the defensive end,” head coach Jeremy Weilert said. “We kept them from getting good shots. We sat back in a 2-3 zone and packed the paint. We were able to get some easy buckets in transition.”
Ten of Humboldt’s 14 players scored in the contest.
Jacob Barker and Zach Korte paced Humboldt with eight points each. Barker had four steals; Korte seven rebounds.
Wyatt Seufert added six points and four steals. Evan Gean also scored six. Collin Gillespie chipped in with four points and six rebounds, Lance Daniels and Cole Murrow each had two points. Daniels pulled in four boards. Josh Vanatta and Jackson Wilder both scored one. Vanatta also had three steals.
The proceedings weren’t as smooth against Yates Center, which blew the game open with an 11-0 run in the third quarter.
“There is a reason Yates Center is 16-0,” Weilert said. “They are a very good basketball team. They forced turnovers and were great in transition. I am proud of how my players hustled. They continued to work hard the entire game.”
Daniels had nine points and five rebounds, followed by Caleb Hart with five points and three rebounds. Seufert and Barker both had four points. Barker had a pair of steals. Jackson Wilder capped the scoring with two points. The Cub team ended the year with a 5-11 record.
