HUMBOLDT — Overtime was needed in Humboldt Middle School’s girls A-Team game against Yates Center Monday night. THE EIGHTH GRADE boys fell to Yates Center 32-18 for their first loss of the season. Humboldt is now 6-1.
With less than five seconds left, Humboldt’s Madison Gean scored on a putback and a layup to tie the game at 23-23 and force overtime.
“Once we got to overtime, we had the momentum and the girls played a great three minutes,” coach Scott Brady said. “I was so proud of the way the girls fought back against a really good Yates Center team and came up big in the last few minutes.”
Maggie Johnson led the team with 10 points and also swiped the ball five times. Kaylie Johnson followed with eight points and pulled down five rebounds. Gean, who tied the game, scored six points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Aricah McCall added four points and four steals. Winter Lohmann scored two points, grabbed 10 boards and had five steals.
The B-Team won 19-17. Sadie Houk and Ashlynn Booth each scored four points. Melanie Hallacy and Alayna Johnson added three. Sydney Barker and Morgan Mauk each scored a basket. Tori White made a free throw.
The C-Team won 4-2 in a two-quarter game. Marisha Collins and Riley Brown each scored two points in the win.
“Hats off to Yates Center, they are a quality basketball team,” coach Jeremy Weilert said. “We struggled to take care of the ball.”
Bo Bigelow scored six points and grabbed four rebounds. Logan Gray also scored six and totaled three blocks. Teryn Johnson scored four points, grabbed five rebounds and had three steals. Tucker Hurst scored a basket and pulled down four rebounds.
The seventh-graders lost 25-22.
“This was a back and forth game all the way until the end,” Weilert said. “We didn’t shoot the ball as well as we could have. I am proud of how hard we played.”
Conor Haviland and Jackson Aikins led the team with six points. Gunner Elder scored four points and had three steals. Briar Orth and Speed Hoepker each scored two points. Taylor Lassman also scored two points, but grabbed five rebounds.
The C-Team won 31-12.
Joe Murrow led the team with 12 points. Calvin Schoendaller scored six points and stole the ball three times. Caleb Klauman scored five points. David Watts scored two points and grabbed three boards, as did Titan Michael. Dawson Lohmann and Kyle O’Neal each made a basket. Luke Yokum had three steals.
Both teams travel to Galesburg on Thursday.
