YATES CENTER — Humboldt Middle School’s seventh-grade boys put forth their best performance of the season, according to their head coach, in a 30-16 win Monday over Yates Center.
“We hustled for every ball and we were much more aggressive on the backboards,” Humboldt coach Jeremy Weilert said.
Teryn Johnson led the way with five points and four rebounds. Tucker Hurst followed with four points and five rebounds. Logan Gray had three points and seven boards.
Kyler Allen had three points and three steals. Dylan Doolittle had three points, while Ryan Sellman had two points and two steals. Kyle O’Neal also had two points.
“Gray and Hurst were tough tonight,” Weilert said. “They really controlled the backboards.”
Humboldt’s eighth-graders fell to Yates Center, 33-17.
Wyatt Seufert had four points and five rebounds. Brent Yost, Ty Griffiths and Lance Daniels each scored three. Jackson Wilder followed with two and Hesston Murrow and Evan Gean each scored one.
“I thought we played much better on the defensive end of the court,” Weilert said. “We were aggressive.”
In C team action, Dawson Lohmann’s 3-pointer with just over a minute remaining secured a 7-6 Humboldt win. Seth Hegwald and Kyle O’Neal both added two points for the Cubs.
ON DEC. 12, Humboldt’s eighth-graders dropped a heartbreaker, 23-20, to Caney Valley in overtime.
“This was a game that was back and forth the entire contest,” Weilert said. “I am pleased with how we improved.”
Daniels had seven points and 11 boards for Humboldt. Zack Korte had four points, while Josh Vanatta, Caleb Hart and Hesston Murrow all scored three.
Humboldt’s seventh-graders fell, 35-31, in another nailbiter.
Doolittle and Johnson scored seven and six points, respectively, to lead the Cubs. Bo Bigelow added five, Gray four, Hurst three and Xavier Bauer, Calvin Schoendaller and Allen each with two.
Humboldt’s C team knocked off Caney Valley, 9-4. Yost scored four for the victors. Cole Murrow added three and Joe Murrow two.
