The Humboldt Middle School Lady Cubs swept Fredonia in a series of close contests Thursday night.
The HMS B-Team provided a strong ending to the evening while holding on to an 11-10 victory while strong defensive play made the difference in the A-Team’s 22-13 win and the C-Team’s 10-6 win.
“I was so proud of the way our girls competed at all three levels,” Humboldt coach Mike Miller said. “We’ve been struggling offensively the last few weeks, and I thought we did a much better job attacking the basket. I keep telling them good things happen when you are aggressive and I feel like we finally saw that tonight.”
The HMS C-Team had the strongest defensive play of the evening after holding Fredonia scoreless in the second, third and fourth quarters following 6 points in the opening frame.
As Fredonia came up dry, the Lady Cubs took the lead with a 4-point third quarter, then added 3 points in the fourth quarter for the win.
Azahlynn Wilkerson had a team-leading 5 points, followed by Azzy Miller with 3 points and Ava Davis with a bucket. Davis, Miller and Zoey Hess tied for the team lead in rebounds with three each, followed by Wilkerson with a pair of boards.
Miller also played a large role in the HMS B-Team’s 11-0 victory with a crucial score in the third quarter.
Despite being shut out in the fourth quarter, the B-Team held Fredonia to just a pair of baskets to hold on for the win.
Brooklyn Watson had a team-leading 5 points, followed by Miller, Zoey Sanchez and Peyton Weilert with a bucket each. Miller also had an eye-popping nine steals. Hess had five rebounds, followed by Watson and Weilert with four boards each.
The A-Team secured a 22-13 victory. After nearly doubling Fredonia’s production each quarter, the Lady Cubs cruised to victory.
Zoey Sanchez had a team-leading 7 points, followed by Hadlee Allen with 6 points, then Quinn Miller with 3 points, and Mylan Sterling, Sydney Danial and Rhys Trieber with a bucket each.
Sanchez also had a team-leading eight rebounds, followed by Sterling with five and Allen with four. Allen had a team-leading two steals while Watson led in assists with two.
