The Humboldt Lady Cubs first day at the KSHAA State Championship in Dodge City did not go as expected as they opened with a pair of losses in pool play.

Kicking off their first state tournament appearance in nearly a decade, the fourth seed Lady Cubs will need a win against undefeated Ellinwood to stay alive.

The Lady Cubs opened the tournament by losing to fifth seed Hillsboro (32-9) in straight sets 25-13, 25-16.

A few hours later, the Lady Cubs faced eighth seed Rossville (22-13) and rebounded by taking the opening set 25-19. They lost the subsequent two sets 25-19, 25-15 for Humboldt’s second loss of the day.

The Lady Cubs next took on undefeated Ellinwood, 41-0, but the score, as well as statistics from the previous contests were not available at press time. Check back over the weekend for complete results from state.
