EUREKA — Humboldt High’s softball team served up plenty of highlights Monday in taking a pair of games from Eureka.
The Lady Cubs broke open a 3-2 lead in game one, scoring 17 runs over the final three innings to defeat Eureka, 20-2 in Game 1.
Paced by Brooklyn Ellis in Game 2, Humboldt broke open a back-and-forth affair in the nightcap with nine runs over the fifth and sixth innings to win, 21-8. Ellis had two singles, a double and eight RBIs in the win.
“Both pitching staffs had their hands full, frequently dealing with runners on base,” Humboldt head coach Brad Piley noted.
The aforementioned Ellis picked up the pitching wins in both games. She gave up six hits and two runs with four strikeouts in the opener. She then struck out five in the nightcap, giving up 12 hits and a walk.
In scoring 41 runs in two games, Humboldt had plenty of hitting stars.
Kady Hart had two singles and two doubles in the first game, driving in five. Kirsten Kobold and Isabelle Murrow both had two singles and a double with two RBIs apiece. Murrow also stole two bases, while Kobold had one. Kirstyn Murrow chipped in with a single, two stolen bases and an RBI. Emily Ross had a single and double with two RBIs. Carsyn Haviland had a single, double, stolen base and RBI. Madison Riebel drove in two with her single.
HUMBOLDT zipped out to an 8-0 lead in its half of the first inning, before Eureka responded with two in the first and four in the second, cutting the Lady Cub margin to 8-6.
The Lady Cubs pushed open the margin to 12-6 in the third, but Eureka scored twice to make it a contest.
Not for for long.
Humboldt scored twice in the fifth for a 14-8 lead before plating seven in the top of the sixth to take control.
Kobold added three singles, a stolen base and three RBIs. Havilnad had two singles, a stolen base and two RBIs. Kirstyn Murrow singled and stole a base, while driving in two. Isabelle Murrow had two singles and an RBI. Hart had an RBI triple. Haviland had two singles and two RBIs with a stolen base. Riebel delivered a single and RBI. Ross drove in two with a single.
Humboldt (8-2) hosts Burlington today.
