EUREKA — Humboldt High’s girls received an early spark Tuesday by sophomore guard Lizzie Myers.
Myers scored 5 points in the first quarter, enough to give the Lady Cubs an early lead over host Eureka High.
McCall took it from there, particularly in the second half, scoring 17 of her team-high 23 points after intermission in a 42-34 victory.
The win lifts Humboldt to 13-2 on the season.
The Humboldt boys weren’t as fortunate.
Eureka broke open a tie game in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Cubs 23-13 over the final eight minutes.
The Cubs’ 62-52 loss drops Humboldt to 12-3 on the season, and snaps a six-game winning streak.
THE LADY Cubs prevailed despite struggling to score, head coach Aubrey Jones said.
“Lizzie really came out and did a nice job for us, and was a good spark early when we needed to get going,” Jones said. “Makaylah sort of put us on her back and carried us through our slump.”
McCall hit 7 of 8 free throws. Humboldt hit 9 of 14 free throws in the fourth quarter, just enough to keep Eureka at bay.
Myers finished with 7 points, Rylan Wilhite with 6. Annalise Whitcomb chipped in with 3, Tilar Wells with 2 and Aricah McCall with 1.
THE LADY Cub junior varsity prevailed, 52-30. Kaylie Johnson scored 13 to lead the way, followed by Aricah McCall with 10, Myers with 9 and Maggie Johnson with 7.
THE BOYS game was tightly fought throughout. The teams were knotted at 14-14 after one period, before Humboldt forged ahead 29-26 at the break. Eureka tied the game again, 39-39, at the end of the third period.
Rhett Smith paced Humboldt with 16 points, five assists and four rebounds, followed by Jake Haviland with 15 points and Rayce Hoepker with 12. Corey Whitcomb had two steals.
DeAllen Nelson led Eureka with 26 points. Braden Larcom followed with 13.
