FREDONIA — Too many matches in too many days didn’t help Humboldt High’s volleyball team Tuesday night. The team dropped both of its matches.
“We have played 10 matches in four days and the girls did not have any legs left,” coach Stephanie Splechter said. “It was disappointing to lose two, but we are ready to regroup for sub-state.”
The Lady Cubs lost their first match against Burlington, 25-18 and 25-15. Annalise Whitcomb dished out 15 assists. Breanna Kline had seven kills and an ace. Sydney Houk had four kills, Delaney Umholtz had three kills and Tiler Wells had two kills. Brook Turner had an assist.
Humboldt then lost to Fredonia, 25-22 and 25-19. Whitcomb again had the most assists with 19, including a kill. Kline had 11 kills with an ace. Umholtz had five kills, while Houk and Makaylah McCall had two kills each. Wells had an ace and a kill.
Humboldt hosts the Class 3A Sub-State tournament Saturday.

THE JUNIOR varsity team also lost both of its matches on Tuesday.
The JV Lady Cubs dropped its first match to Burlington in three sets. Humboldt won the second set, 27-25, but lost the first set, 25-21, and a tiebreaker, 15-8.
Rylan Wilhite had two kills and two aces, and led the team with 10 assists. Bri Ames had two assists and an ace. Kassie Angelton had five kills and three aces. Lizzie Myers had three kills.
“I was extremely proud of how the girls played against Burlington,” coach Cara Thomas said. “We were setting up the ball and playing our game. Unfortunately, there weren’t enough points that fell our way in the third set to pull out the win.”
Again, Humboldt lost its match in three sets — this time to Fredonia. The Lady Cubs won the first set 26-24, then lost the next two sets 25-20 and 15-4.
Wilhite had all nine assists for the team and two aces. Myers had three kills and two aces. Angelton had three kills and an ace. Bri Ames had a kill and an ace. Kailey Wolken had a kill. Britnee Works had a kill.
“We played extremely well during our first two sets against Fredonia,” Thomas said. “In our third set, we fell apart and couldn’t get our passes where they needed to go. I was still very proud of the intensity level that the girls played at.”
The C-Team lost its only match 25-13 and 25-19 to Fredonia. Angelton had six kills and an ace. Chassis Hoepker had a team-high eight assists. Wolken had two kills and an ace. Works had two kills and two aces. Myers had two kills. Kira McReynolds had an ace.
On Monday, the JV team won its best-of-five match against Sedan in three sets 25-17, 26-24 and 25-18. Wilhite had a kill, eight aces and 13 assists. Myers had a kill and two aces. Ames had three aces and an assist. Wolken had six kills and an ace. Angelton had nine kills and six aces. Works had a kill.
