PITTSBURG — Iola Middle School’s eighth-grade girls capped their season on a high note Saturday, capturing second place at the Pittsburg Winter Classic.
The Pony girls came up just short in their opener after trailing Fort Scott 14-3 in the first quarter. Iola outscored the Tigers, 12-8, in the second half, but still fell, 26-19.
Their second game against Parsons was much more fruitful.
Iola led 10-1 after one period and 17-4 at halftime of a 32-14 victory.
“These girls finished off their season with a couple of great efforts,” Iola head coach Marty Taylor said. “Against Fort Scott, we probably played our best half of the year in the second half. We came out against Parsons with a lot of energy and got ahead early.”
Colbi Riley led the way in the loss to Fort Scott with nine points. Madison Carlin followed with five, while Olivia Taylor and Carly Cescon added two apiece. Karly McGuffin scored one.
Riley also scored a team-high 10 in the win over Parsons. Carlin chipped in with eight, Chloe Wilson and Taylor had four each, and McGuffin, Katie Bauer and Addy Prather all had two.
“This group should be proud of its work ethic and effort,” Taylor said. “No matter what the score was, these kids played as hard as they could. That says a lot about this team of young ladies.”
