CHANUTE — Iola Indian manager Steve Conger is not sure what to do. The Iola American Legion Post 15 baseball team plays well when using aluminum bats but then falls flat while using wooden bats.
Case in point, Thursday’s doubleheader at Chanute.
The Indians defeated Chanute Post 170 13-1 in five innings to open the action — using aluminum bats. Iola had 10 hits in the game.
Mark Bristol, the winning pitcher, limited Chanute to four hits. He walked three and struck out four. He retired Chanute in order to end the game.
Ryan Latta went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a single. Chris Heffern and Corey Taylor each had two singles. Hitting a single each were Bristol, Ethan Ericson and Jarred Latta.
In the second game, the teams used wooden bats. Iola had seven hits but lost 7-2.
Bristol led the Iola offense with two singles. Ryan Latta, Chris Heffern, Taylor, Clint Heffern and Mason Coons each had a base hit.
Levi Ashmore started, going three innings and giving up seven runs on six hits and two walks. He had two strikeouts.
Clint Heffern pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out three. Jerrik Sigg worked a 1-2-3 sixth inning.
Iola goes to Burlington for a tournament this weekend.
