A pair of dominating wins Sunday has the Iola Blue and Gold Soccer Club in line for the Southeast Kansas League championship.
The traveling soccer team, consisting of players 14 and under, racked up wins of 8-0 over Chanute Blue and 7-1 over Chanute White. Sunday gives Iola a 5-2 record. The squad will host Independence at 2 p.m. Sunday in Iola’s final home match of the year. Independence has a 5-1 record.
Chloe Gardner’s hat trick led the way in the opener. She had plenty of help. Mason Snavely had a goal and two assists. Braden Plumlee and Zane Beasley each had a goal and an assist. Nolan Jones and Collin Bedell each contributed a goal. Jeremy Waldman had two assists. Jared Martinez assisted on one goal.
Zack Kress had three saves on goal. Parker Smith added two saves.
Iola led 4-0 at intermission.
THE SECOND game was a bit tighter, at least at the start.
Iola led by only 2-0 at halftime before turning on the jets.
Snavely led the way with two goals and an assist. Gardner had two goals, while Beasley had four assists to go with one goal. Plumlee chipped in with a goal and two assists. Kendall Jay also had a goal.
Admission to Sunday’s 2 p.m. match is free, although concessions will be sold to help cover expenses for an upcoming tournament in Leawood May 18-19.
