Iola’s freshman volleyball team made it all the way to the championship in the Prairie View Tournament on Saturday, but the Fillies fell just short of taking first.
Iola went 2-1 in pool play, defeating Central Heights and Osawatomie while losing to Paola, in order to advance to the tournament’s semifinal against Burlington.
The Fillies defeated the Wildcats 25-22, 25-21 to advance to the championship round of the bracket where they would face Paola in a rematch.
But after winning the first set 25-19, Iola lost the next two 11-25, 12-15 to finish the tournament in second place behind Paola.
“As a team, I believe that we have improved so much since the first weeks of practice,” coach Jeff Fehr said. “They’ve started to pick up the pace and speed … next comes consistency. Second place in this tourney is a great accomplishment, we must build upon this in the next few weeks.”
