An offensive surge helped the Iola Mustangs baseball team sweep a doubleheader against Neodesha Thursday night.

“We did pretty well,” coach Mark Percy said. “We needed to get back to hitting the ball a little bit. I thought we did.”

The Mustangs won game one 12-2, never trailing.

“In the first game that’s the guy we saw the other day against Neodesha, in the Humboldt tournament, and I don’t think we hit him quite as well today,” Percy said.

In the first, Trenton Latta came around to score off an RBI-double from Derrick Weir. The Mustangs led 1-0.

After a scoreless second inning, an eight-run third inning launched Iola out in front 9-0.  hit a three-run homer. Three Bluestreaks errors helped the Mustangs score. Drew Faulhaber had a double. Ethan Scheibmeir and Latta had a base hit.

Neodesha scored two in the fourth inning, which Iola answered back with a three-run inning, ending the game 12-2. Coleson Wiggin had a solo homer. Kohl Endicott and Theo Minor had base hits.

GAME TWO had the same result. The Mustangs streaked to a 16-0 win.

“We’re getting there, we needed some confidence,” Percy said. “And we needed our pitchers to have a chance to get their arms loose.”

Iola scored three in the first. Scheibmeir had a base hit. Weir and Faulhaber both walked. Wiggin walked, which brought in Scheibmeir. Ethan Sigg hit into a fielders choice that scored a run. A wild pitch brought in the other.

A 13-run second inning sealed the deal. The first five that came up reached base and would come around to score. Scheibmeir and Brice Aiello had two singles in the inning. Faulhaber had a double and single. Wiggin, Latta, Endicott and Garrett Wade had a single.

Iola next plays Independence at Riverside Park at 4:30 p.m. Monday.
