HUMBOLDT — Some potent hitting, combined with Jo Ellison’s pitching, kept the Lady Cubs on the winning track Tuesday with a 10-0, 17-6 sweep of visiting Caney Valley.
In Game 1, Ellison tossed a four-hit shutout, while Lakyn Meadows hit an early two-run home run to spark Humboldt to a win.
Then, after the Lady Bullpups jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in Game 2, Ellison came on in relief to throw four innings of four-hit ball as Humboldt rallied for a 17-6 romp.
The sweep pushes the Lady Cubs to 9-4 on the season as they head to Friday’s Lindsey Friederich Memorial Tournament at the Humboldt Sports Complex.
Kamy De La Torre started Humboldt’s scoring in the opener with an RBI single, leading to Meadows’s blast to center.
Leah Carman added an RBI double to trigger a five-run third inning. Meadows and Carlie Weilert drove in runs with singles before Hadley Gallow made it 8-0 with a sac fly.
De La Torre brought home Skylar Hottenstein with a fourth-inning sacrifice fly. Weilert’s RBI grounder pushed the lead to double digits.
That was more than enough for Ellison, who struck out three and walked two in the win. Meadows singled and homered, Hottenstein had two hits, including a double, and Carman had a double. Laney Hull, De LaTorre and Weilert all had singles.
CANEY VALLEY took advantage of a dropped third strike, utilizing four hits and a hit batter to push across five runs before Humboldt came to bat in the nightcap.
The Lady Cubs scarcely blinked. De La Torre went deep for a two-run shot in the first to close the gap to 5-3. Carman singled in a run, Hull mashed an RBI double to tie the game, and Weilert was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give Humboldt the lead, 6-5.
Addisyn Drake followed with an RBI single to make it 7-5 by the end of the second inning.
Kinley Hart stole home in the third, Laney Hart tripled home another run, and De La Torre added an RBI single to make it 10-5 after 3.
The hits kept coming. Galloway singled and Hart doubled, preceding an RBI grounder from Hottenstein and an RBI single from Carman.
Meadows drove in one with a single and Weilert plated two with a double. Drake finished off the scoring with a sacrifice fly.
Ellison and Jadey Ellis combined to surrender eight hits with three strikeouts.
De La Torre went 3-for-3 with a homer, Hart doubled twice, Hull tripled and singled and Weilert had a single and double. Adding two singles each were Carman, Meadows and Galloway. Drake had a single as well.
